Transport

Trentham is only an 8 minute drive to the centre of Stoke, but you can also get there via public transport in around 30 minutes. Alternatively, you could cycle in around 20 minutes, or walk for about an hour.

Local schools

There are two primary schools in Trentham to choose from - Ash Green and The Priory - as well as one high school, Trentham High School.

History

Trentham has popped up a couple of times throughout history! It was where the Mercian princess Werburgh died in 699AD. It was also the location of the Trentham Priory (dissolved in 1540). The area was also bombed in World War |, and was where thousands of French troops were stationed after they fled Europe at the fall of France in 1940.

Trentham was originally the estate village for Trentham Hall, the former seat of the Dukes of Sutherland. The Sutherland family estate eventually formed Trentham Gardens.

Hanley is the heart and soul of Stoke-on-Trent - it has something for everyone! From shopping centres and museums to an abundance of green spaces. Creative types will love its galleries and street art. While foodies will be spoilt for choice in The Cultural Quarter. And music lovers are sure to feel at home in The Sugarmill and The Underground - two of the city’s most popular live music venues. 

Not to mention, Hanley also has a waterpark, ski centre and mini golf course, meaning you’ll never be short of things to do on the weekend.

Transport

Hanley is only a short drive away from the centre of Stoke, whether by car or public transport. Alternatively, you can walk there within 40 minutes or a quick 20 minutes cycle.

Local schools

Primary school wise, Waterside Primary School is a solid choice as it's rated Outstanding, while Holden Lane Primary, Forest Park Primary and Abbey Hulton Primary School are all rated "good". For older children, The Excel Academy, City College (Haywood Sixth Form Academy) and City of Stoke-On-Trent Sixth Form College are all viable options.

History

There is some evidence that the area had Roman occupation with a fort by the river, where it might have been used as a strategic wharf. Apart from this, the first references to Hanley were in charters in 962 and 972 as Hanlee. Later on, the Saxon chief Brictric built his manor in the area, which would later become the basis of the castle.

But by the time of the Norman Conquest, the area was desolate and overrun by woodland. Within 50 years however, Hanley had grown to a thriving community. Over time, Hanley become known for its flourishing pottery industry. By the mid 19th century, it was a populated parish, with the population growing following a number of small housing schemes from the 1960s onwards.

Meir Park is located in the south east of Stoke-on-Trent. It’s one of the best places in Stoke to raise a family, thanks to good transport links, varied choice of primary and secondary schools, and easy access to some of Staffordshire’s most beautiful green spaces.

If you love long dog walks, weekend bike rides and summer picnics with friends, Longton Park is sure to win you over. It’s a must-see, no matter what the season. Travel a little further down Trentham Road and you’ll get to the stunning 700-acre Trentham Estate.

Slightly further out, Meir is only a 30 minute journey on public transport into the centre of Stoke, or a 15 minute drive by car. Alternatively, you can cycle in within 30 minutes!

Local schools

There are a number of highly rated primary schools around Meir, including Newstead Primary, St Gregory's Catholic Academy, Sandon Primary and Belgrave St Bartholomew's Academy. For secondary education, the Discovery Academy, Blythe Bridge High School, Ormiston Meridian Academy and Abbey Hill School are all rated "good" by Ofsted.

History

The Meir Aerodrome was a Royal Air Force airport which operated in the 1930s and was used for military purposes both before 1940 and World War II. Following its closure in the 1970s, the site was developed into housing, becoming Meir Park. You might noticed that some street names are aviation-themed!
