Bournemouth house buying guide

Southbourne or “Sobo” as it’s also called, lies to the west of Bournemouth and is a great choice for young families looking to buy a home.

It’s largely a residential area but you’ll find plenty of cute cafes, restaurants and pubs down on Southbourne Grove.

The High Street also has its fair share of cafes and interesting independent stores, too. 

Southbourne also has one of the nicest (and less chaotic) stretches of beach in Dorset. Simply take the Fisherman’s Walk nature trail, which cuts through woodland, to get to the family-friendly Southbourne Beach.

There’s also nearby cliff top walks where you’ll get stunning views of the coastline, as well as a Visitor Centre perfect for family days out.

For those wanting to be closer to Bournemouth centre, Westbourne is a great option!

It’s actually ‘in’ Bournemouth, so you can get all the perks of being within walking distance of the centre but still benefit from its a villagey feel.

Full of independent shops, cafes and coffee houses as well as a beautiful Victorian, grade II listed arcade, Westbourne very much has its own identity apart from the town centre.

The best of both worlds, Westbourne is the perfect choice for young professionals or small families wanting to be close to the centre of things, but in an area with its own thing going on, too.

Boscombe hasn’t had the best reputation over the years, but over the past decade this suburb of Bournemouth has had a glow up.

The area is full of character with its art deco buildings, 19th century Royal Arcade and well-known market twice a week - a great spot for picking up some fresh local produce to cook up a storm.

With access to Bournemouth Beach, you can sunbathe, surf and paddle board to your heart’s content, while the iconic Boscombe Pier provides stunning views across Poole Bay.

The beach isn't the only place to feel closer to nature - Boscombe Cliff Gardens and adjoined Boscombe Overcliff Local Nature Reserve are both worth a visit for outdoor lovers and young families.
